If you are just tuning in, you can read past newsletters to catch up on how we found the Montalcino house, how we got it under contract, our ideas for the property, and the wildest closing ever!
When we last left off, Stefano and I had just closed on the Montalcino house, in what turned out to be the wildest closing ever. We had no deed (yet), no keys (yet), and a home full of the prior owners’ stuff, but the house was ours!
We closed in Rome on a Thursday and immediately made plans to travel to Montalcino the following weekend to spend some time doing…we weren’t sure what. Planning, mostly. And just being there.
The house isn’t in condition to stay in yet, so we booked an Airbnb close by, rented a car, and set off for Montalcino. En route, we messaged Elena, the former owner’s daughter, to coordinate picking up the keys, and Gabriele, our project manager, to let him know we closed on the house and to schedule a time to meet.
We pulled into town and found our Airbnb, grateful for the small size of our rental car as Stefano navigated the narrow alleyways and tucked it into the garage. After bringing our luggage upstairs to the apartment that would be our home for the week, we promptly left again and headed over to our house.

It was late afternoon, and the sun was shining on the façade of the house as we approached. Stefano opened the front door, and we stepped inside. After a few hours poking around, sticking our heads into the attic space, examining the mechanicals, and making notes, we locked back up and went to dinner.
